I’ve never been a math wiz. In fact, it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to achieve my math goals in high school (ok, maybe not the blood). My beliefs about ability have changed a lot over the years and I believe that we can become good at the things that we are not very good at through persistence and well directed, hard work. A really good friend of mine and I had our desks together in math class so we would spend a lot of time working on math problems together. It’s always better to do hard things with a friend right? And I found that we would get through much more work and learn even if we did goof off every once in a while. At the end of the term we would have the big exam and my math teacher, who is on my top five best-teachers-I’ve-ever-had list, would walk around and glance at our work as she walked by. As she came by our desks she would just say something small but encouraging to help encourage us along. My favourite phrase that she would say coupled with a nod and a smile was, “You’re on the right track”. That phrase would just breathe new life into me and renew my confidence in the fact that even though the problem in front of me was super tangled and gnarly, I was at least ‘on the right track’.
I think that is what God does with us. My sister read a quote to me a couple of days ago that goes something like “If we realise that life is a test, then everything we do is significant”. Life will test us one way or another. We might feel like we cannot go any further and the burden of our cares, anxiety and worry just feels too much. But then a word from a friend, a phone call, a smile a promise read in the bible, a prayer, comes in at the right time, like my high school math teacher and says “Do not fear, you’re on the right track”. No matter how difficult the path we are walking, it is reassuring to know that we are on the right track. Here are some verses that I hope will remind you that no matter how difficult your struggle, you are on the right track and God sees your struggle and he is with you. In fact, the struggle will not go to waste because “..”.we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).
If you think you are not on the right path, that is ok too. Theres a verse for that!
Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,
“This is the way, walk in it,”
Whenever you turn to the right hand
Or whenever you turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21
Listen to that voice, repent, take heart and surrender your ways to God. He is ever willing to offer those words of encouragement and that smile of approval. He won’t remove us from the test but he will come around, glance down lovingly and with all the encouragement in the world he will say, “Keep going, you’re on the right track”.
