How many of you struggle with doubt on a daily basis? I’m going to take a guess that it’s most of us! I know I do. Which is part of the reason that I sat down to write. For the most part, I try to stay out of the doubtful realm and live in an atmosphere of hope, positivity and a ‘anything is possible’ attitude but there are times that I do not feel so hopeful, I do not feel so calm or sure of myself. There are times when I look around and wonder, am I doing the right thing? Did I make a good decision? Was it the right thing to do? What do I actually want in life? I wrestle with these and more questions, sometimes coming up with an answer and other times becoming more and more tangled in the process.
One thing that I have realised in the doubting, is that we will always have room for doubt. ALWAYS. Even in the time that we are the most sure there is still plenty of room for the ‘what if’ to creep in. It seems like a strange fact of life that amidst the beauty, joy and wonder of life there is also ugliness, sadness and pain. It may even seem that for every certainty, there is uncertainty, for every truth, there is a lie. However, if we live analysing this aspect of life and lamenting the fact that there are so many reasons to doubt then we ignore the fact that there are so many reasons to believe in your purpose and dreams. To have faith and hope when things are bleak and unpromising is not wishful or naive. It is not weakness to be kind in the face of hate nor humble when taunted by others. Rather, it is the constant reminder that it is up to us to be the ones to break the cycle, it is up to us to shine our lights in the corners where light has not reached.
Where light is, the shadows cannot remain. What better way to get rid of the shadows of doubt than to shine hope and courage!
So this is the light that I want to shine on you today.
You will have doubts. You will have disappointments and pain.
You will wonder why you are here in the first place and wether you have made a mistake.
You may find your dreams completly shattered in an instant and not know what to do.
But in the moments of your greatest doubt and uncertainty I want to remind you that this too is only one side of the process. It is only an event and not a destination. Obstacles will come but success comes to those who fix their eyes on the goal and who work steadily towards it. I want to remind you that you are loved, you are special, simply because you are infinitely valuable to the one who created you. In moments of difficulty and trial we are simply in school and believe me, the test is not meant to be easy! With every test, trial or problem, we learn, we grow. There is a much bigger plan and purpose for our lives and if we have the courage to take another step further, we’ll see a little more than we did before and hopefully, that will give you the courage you need to go just a little further and after that, a little further.
Doubt will always be there. But so too will be joy, hope and faith. I choose the latter, which one, will you?
“Our doubts are traitors,
and make us lose the good we oft might win,
by fearing to attempt.”
― William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure
